Machining Steel 1080

Steel 1080 is a High Carbon Steel material with 0.8% carbon content. Carbon steels range in carbon content between 0.08% to 1%. The machinability is very sensitive to the amount of carbon. Materials with very low carbon content (below 0.15%) are too soft and gummy, and materials with a carbon content above 0.5% are harder and thus have lower machinability

Since Steel 1080, has 0.8%, it is relatively more challenging to machine compared with average carbon steel and has a machinability rating of 48%. On the other hand, it is stronger and has better mechanical properties. High carbon steels are less popular since when better mechanical properties are required, the better choice is alloy steels.

You can find here a list of machinability Ratings for different Carbon Steels.

Summery:

  • For general Turning of Steel 1080 at stable conditions use a grade with a Hard substrate and CVD coating.
  • In case you are running at a cutting speed that is lower than 490 SFM (150 m/min), it is better to use a grade with a
  • Hard substrate and PVD coating.
  • For general Milling use a grade with a Semi Hard substrate and PVD coating.
  • For detailed carbide grades recommendations, check the Below Chart, or use the Grades Wizrad.
  • Recommended Cutting speed range for turning at stable conditions is 590 - 790 [SFM] / 180 - 240 [m/min].
  • Recommended Cutting speed range for milling with stable clamping and short overhang is 360 - 490 [SFM] / 110 - 150 [m/min]
  • For detailed cutting speed recomendations, check the Below Table, or use our Speed and Feed Calculator.
