Machining Stainless Steel Custom 465

Custom 465 is a martensitic, age-hardenable stainless steel alloy with a high nickel concentration of 11% and chromium of 12%. It has improved tensile strength and fracture toughness compared to 17-4PH, which makes it an excellent choice for aerospace components that require these properties. Custom 465 has almost the same corrosion resistance as stainless 304.
It was developed for components where the properties of 174-PH and 15-5PH are not sufficient; however, it has poor machinability of about 30% (compared with about 45% of the more common PH alloys)

Summery:

  • Due to its hardness and low cutting speed, it is best to machine it with a carbide grade that has a very hard substrate and thin PVD coating.
  • For detailed carbide grades recommendations, check the Below Chart, or use the Grades Wizrad.
  • Recommended Cutting speed range for turning at stable conditions is 360 - 490 [SFM] / 110 - 150 [m/min].
  • Recommended Cutting speed range for milling with stable clamping and short overhang is 230 - 310 [SFM] / 70 - 95 [m/min]
  • For detailed cutting speed recomendations, check the Below Table, or use our Speed and Feed Calculator.
